Le Bain Stairwell by Lady Aiko, June 29 2010

A photograph taken from the bottom of a narrow, dark staircase, illuminated intensely by a deep red light, giving the entire scene an unsettling glow. The walls on both sides are covered in layered black and white artwork, and a stylized, comic-book-like figure is painted on the wall at the top landing. Two metal handrails run up the stairs, reflecting the red light.

Description

Murals inside of the stairwell at the bar Le Bain as photographed by Christopher Murray. They are bathed in red light, have a tattoo-like style, and showcase images such as a runner, flowers, and a woman with her eyes closed.

Opinion and Significance

Le Bain hosts popular gay events such as Paradisco and attendees will recognize these murals, which one must pass to access the rooftop that overlooks downtown Manhattan.

Other

Other images of the murals are shown at the photographer’s link. In the social media post linked above the artist is quoted as saying “I love the hotel theme as an adult playground. I combined different elements with the vocabulary and symbolism such as EROTIC, ECSTASY, LOVE, ANGUISH, GUILT and AGGRESSIVENESS – to describe the atmosphere.”

The stairwell was featured in the Madonna music video “Bitch I’m Madonna” (2015) and is the backdrop for a scene where Madonna kisses a female-presenting background performer.
